Two and a half years in, I finally trust my body again.

"I came to Matt after my third failed bootcamp. I wanted a number on a scale. He kept asking what I wanted to be able to do."

The first six months were unglamorous. Three sessions a week, walks every day, the same five breakfasts. I lost no weight in month one. I lost six pounds across the next year — and added a deadlift, a pull-up, and the kind of sleep I hadn't had since college. I run with my kids now. I don't think about food in the way I used to. The body changed, slowly. The relationship to it changed completely.

I stopped treating my back like it was made of glass.

"Two years of avoiding the gym after a herniated disc. Matt rebuilt me from the floor up."

We started with breathing drills and goblet squats with a 12kg kettlebell. I felt patronised for about a week. Then I felt strong. Eighteen months in I pulled 180kg off the floor without a flinch — pain-free, in a position I'd been told I'd never get back. The takeaway wasn't the number. It was that the fear had been doing more damage than the disc.

Perimenopause didn't break me. It rearranged me.

"I was sleeping four hours and crying at spreadsheets. I needed someone who wouldn't tell me to do more cardio."

Matt cut my training volume in half and made me eat actual breakfasts. He taught me to lift heavy in a way I'd never let myself. Three years in, I'm in the strongest, calmest version of my body I've ever had — and the lab numbers back it up. The work is quieter than what the internet sells. It also actually works.

I stopped designing my life around the gym.

"I was doing five sessions a week and burning out on month four. Matt cut me back to three. I got stronger."

The hardest part of the first month was permission to do less. I came in chasing a six-pack and a 200kg squat and a half-marathon, all at once. Matt picked one. Eight months later I have the squat, a body I actually like, and weekends I don't spend recovering. The plan is the same plan, week after week. That's the trick.
